Glossary of Terms

The technical vocabulary of the Initiative, alphabetized and defined.

Lycanthropic Midrash: The exegetical practice of assigning Torah portions to characters afflicted with clinical lycanthropy, then reconstructing the speech they would have delivered from the bimah.
Ontological Panic: The moment in a narrative when the narrator realizes he has abandoned his own premise. Named for the Brisket Transition. Cf. §V of the Critical Apparatus.
Liturgical Temporal Shift: Any deliberate rescheduling of a covenantal event to accommodate a non-covenantal biological imperative — most famously, the movement of a Bar Mitzvah from Shabbat morning to Erev Shabbat under a full moon.
Catering-Induced Fourth-Wall Collapse: A structural breakdown in which the artist ceases performing the song and begins describing the reception menu instead. Distinguished from ordinary meta-commentary by its complete absence of intent.
Suburban Eucharist: The transubstantiation of a religious sacrament into a country-club catering item. Historic exemplar: the eight-foot party sub.
Apotropaic Reduplication: The doubling of a warding word ('spooky scary') to strengthen its protective force. See Isaiah 6:3 for the triplicated form.
The Third-Verse Narrative Collapse: The moment in the Unabridged Folio at which the werewolf premise is jettisoned in favor of a real-time inventory of the buffet. The Journal considers this the single most important 12-bar passage in post-2000 novelty rap.
Forced Commercial Re-Enchantment: The ritual return to the refrain at the close of a novelty single, executed not from thematic conviction but from contractual runtime.
